Why Appalachian State can cover

The Mountaineers have won three games by double digits, including a 45-16 triumph at Georgia State in their last game on Oct. 2. Senior quarterback Chase Brice is off to a solid start to the season, completing 104-of-153 passes (68 percent) for 1,360 yards and eight touchdowns. He has been picked off three times, but has a rating of 156.0. Brice has also rushed for a score. Against Georgia State, Brice was red-hot, completing 20-of-28 passes (71.4 percent) for 326 yards and three touchdowns.

His top target has been senior wide receiver Corey Xavier Sutton. Sutton has 32 catches for 473 yards (14.8 average) and three touchdowns. In his last three games, he has eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark, including a season-high 128 yards vs. Elon on Sept. 18.

Why Louisiana can cover

Despite that, the Mountaineers are not a lock to cover the Appalachian State vs. Louisiana spread. That’s because the Ragin’ Cajuns are hard to beat at home, going 14-3 at Cajun Field under coach Billy Napier, who is in his fourth season with the team. Senior quarterback Levi Lewis is also off to a fast start to the season, completing 94-of-150 passes (62.7 percent) for 1,096 yards and seven touchdowns. He has only been intercepted once and has a rating of 138.1. He has also carried 38 times for 122 yards (3.2 average) and one TD.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Dontae Fleming is making another good impression and leads the team with 13 receptions for 166 yards (12.8 average) and a score. In the Sept. 25 win at Georgia Southern, Fleming caught four passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
